Cardiff Theatre Shows and Venues

Cardiff is filled with theatre shows and venues that offer a variety of productions, from concerts to Mary Poppins and orchestras. There are an abundance of theatres all around Cardiff University close to Bute Park and Cardiff Castle.

Wales Millennium Centre

Welsh and English letters greet visitors as they enter the theatre. This is an iconic venue, and it’s a huge open space that adds beauty and appeal. The theatre is close to Cardiff Bay, and there are always new shows and events taking place at the centre.

Coffee shops and bars are present inside the modern, clean theatre.

Comfortable seating and ample leg room allow guests to remain comfortable while taking in musicals and performances. The theatre is at Bute Place in Cardiff Bay.

The theater’s main hall, Donald Gordon Theater, seats 1,897 people. There are two additional halls that seat 350 people and 250 people.

The Centre houses eight arts organizations, including the national orchestra, theatre, dance, opera and literature companies.

Free performances, tours, workshops and talks take place at the theater. Guests can also become members to get steep discounts, advanced priority booking, and numerous exclusive offers and promotions.

St. David’s Hall

St. David’s Hall is home to the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra. The venue hosts a variety of shows:

  • Comedy
  • International concerts
  • Rock & Pop performances
  • Children’s shows

The caliber of shows at St. David’s Hall makes it worth the trip. Top comedians, world-known musicians and a variety of theater shows take place in the hall every year. The exterior was revamped years ago to make the hall more appealing.

The venue is wheelchair accessible, and the staff is very helpful.

Young talented musicians play at the venue every week, and the interior is well maintained. This is a great theater to bring the entire family.

New Theatre

New Theatre is on Park Place and has been around since 1906, although several updates and renovations have taken place in the building’s 100+ year history. The building has a capacity of 1,144 and is considered a Grade II building.

The theatre is home to a variety of shows, including concerts and plays.

Dirty Dancing, shows from the Northern Ballet, quartets and several musicians come to the venue to entertain guests every year.

Sherman Theatre

Sherman Theatre offers a variety of shows that you won’t find anywhere else. The venue is playing interesting shows this year, including:

  • The Moot Virginity of Catherine of Aragon
  • Pink Mist
  • Wastwater

And dozens of shows are added throughout the year. The venue helps co-produce and write new shows, which allows guests to see shows at the theater before they’re available anywhere else.

The venue is supportive of new and emerging artists.

Development schemes allow for mentorship and nurturing of new talent. This is an intimate venue, and the crew ensures everyone is having a good time. The venue is also clean with ample toilets (something many venues lack).

The Gates Arts Centre

The Gates Arts Centre is located on Keppoch Street, and is listed as a Grade II building. The venue opened their doors in 2004, and there are shows for the entire family:

  • Dance

The quaint building offers comfortable seating, and the café offers cheap prices and great food and drink. The building is an old converted church with standing room in front of the stage. A bar area is located on the ground floor, and guests boast about the cleanliness and easy view of the stage – something many venues don’t offer.

There’s a dance studio inside of The Gate along with an exhibition area. This is a place where many young talents go to refine their skills. Open mic nights and quizzes are available as well as dance classes that are offered in the venue.
